The PMD unit employs Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology to remove water vapor from ordinary compressed air. The 4-way valve (1) directs the wet air into one of the two desiccant chambers (2) where nearly all of the water vapor and CO₂ is removed. The ultra-dry, CO₂-free air leaving the chamber passes through the outlet shuttle valve (3) to the application.

A precision orifice in the outlet shuttle valve disk (3) allows a portion of the air to be redirected back through the off-line desiccant chamber (4), purging it of the accumulated moisture and CO₂. The purge air then exits the unit through the 4-way valve and muffler (5). A solid state timer governs the process by controlling the 4-way valve.
